 Ninagawa Mika

Japanese photographer

Japanese photographer, Ninagawa Mika, captured a series of goldfish. In her works, goldfish has been captured as a creature distorted by human desire. They are beautiful but fragile, the only thing they can do is to swim elegantly in the tank. “Goldfish resembles tireless dancers in fancy dresses in the ballroom.” (2003) The image of goldfish living in man-made environment is Mika’s deep understanding of the society that we live in. Goldfish is a symbol of people in modern days. We have been isolated from natural environment, trapped and tied in lives without knowing. Human helped goldfish to breed, and felt satisfied from those ‘man-made’ creatures. As Mika mentioned in her goldfish works, she is not capturing goldfish but ongoing human desires and wants.

Michael Landy

British Artists

I can see similar meanings within in Michael Landy’s work, Art Bin. This giant glass bin is like a giant fish tank, and all the abandoned art works inside are goldfish. These deserted art pieces were failures towards artists who created them, nevertheless, they became a successful piece of work to Landy. He once said in the interview, “it’s a repository for artist’s failure.”(2010) It’s like goldfish, those gorgeous and pricey artworks have been represented to the public in a tank. Through this unique way of exhibited abandoned works, we can clearly see the emptiness of human desire behind them.

His works bring in a lot of different things like music, literature, computer games, media, architecture, art history and science fiction. That means his works absorb a lot of cultural phenomena

Painting has to address or recognise these other forms, and this was why hee started bringing in collage to the work that he was making in Greece, and why he started bringing in virtual spaces and digital aspects to my practice. he thought that is we were going to address this technological age then we needed to get involved in it somehow.
